SLC fee fails at referendum, voters approve all other fees

Despite a majority of students saying yes to most fees, the mandatory Student Life Centre (SLC) fee increase failed with 59% opposition. The AMS expresses concerns about funding for its operations in the revitalized JDUC. However, students approved new optional fees for organizations like Queens Black Academic Society, Social Issues Commission’s Menstrual Equity Project, Proactive Minds, and Queen’s Dental Aid Network.

AMS winter referendum statements

AMS Executive Candidates Hello Queen's, We are Team RTZ and we are vying for your vote to be elected as the Executive for the Alma Mater Society. Respectively, we have worked in various branches of student involvement since the beginning of our time at Queen’s. With our vast experience, we believe we have what it takes to significantly improve the Alma Mater Society.   We are honest, and we promise to speak candidly to you. Unlike many candidates in the past, our motives for running as Executive of the AMS stem from shared frustration over the inaction of the AMS this year. Over the past few years, student government at Queen’s has faced many challenges. Although we have many students to thank for leading us throughout the years, persistent failures and issues prevail within the Alma Mater Society.

AMS Assembly: Assembly renews membership with OUSA

Photo:  AMS Assembly gathered Friday over Zoom to discuss club fees, University operations, and its affiliation with the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA). Matthew Melon, commissioner of external affairs, presented the findings of the Special Committee on External Alignment, the committee struck to analyze the AMS’ membership with OUSA. OUSA is the organization that represents Ontario’s 150,000 students to the Province.  Every three years, the AMS must vote to renew its membership with OUSA. The committee found some issues with the organization—the quality of external policies and the time commitment on the part of AMS staff—but agreed the positives outweighed the negatives.
