Three Mackay Whitsunday youth will find out if they have what it takes to become a politician as part of a “unique” Queensland program.
Whitsunday MP Amanda Camm said Nikkia Goodall of Mackay, Jessie Borg of Mirani and Dominic McCarthy from the Whitsundays were chosen for the assembly of the 26th Queensland Youth Parliament.
“I would like to congratulate the three youth members,” Ms Camm said.
“This opportunity allows youth leaders to participate in a six-month program including being part of a committee to propose law reform, participating in community consultations and debating their Bill in a youth parliament.”

Subscriber only Burnett MP Stephen Bennett is calling on young leaders to apply for Youth parliament to create real change in Queensland. Young people have the opportunity to rub shoulders with MPs and learn the inner workings of the government, but the deadline is looming. It s an opportunity for our youth to have their voices heard and to create real change in their community, he said. The program teaches you how the system works and I know the youth members also have a great time and make good friends along the way. I encourage any young people interested in how our democracy works to apply.

SIX local charities will share in close to $40,000 raised by Ipswich City Council through its popular community Christmas tradition.
The decision was made last year for the Christmas Wonderland lights display to be ticketed to best manage the event during COVID-19.
Although the event in Nerima Gardesn at Queens Park is usually free, it was used as a chance to raise crucial funds for local organisations hamstrung by the pandemic. Christmas Wonderland 2020. Photo: Jim Madden MP
A total of $47,295 was raised from the event through ticket sales but just over $8000 went towards ticketing and credit card fees.

Young Central Queenslanders who are looking to make a real change in their communities are encouraged to participate in the 2021 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament, with nominations now open.
The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament offers young Queenslanders aged 15 to 25 years the opportunity to speak up for their communities and learn first-hand about parliamentary processes.
Member for Keppel and Assistant Education Minister Brittany Lauga said since 1996, the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament had brought young people together to learn about democracy, connect with their peers and have a say about important issues facing the state.
“I encourage young people to nominate for this program to assist them to build their leadership skills and learn about influencing change,” Ms Lauga said.
