South Shore climate change activists weigh in on new MA legislation

South Shore climate activists have expressed both relief and concern over the climate change bill recently signed by Gov. Charlie Baker, supportive of the bill’s goals – such as a roadmap for net-zero emissions by 2050 – but concerned about ongoing environmental issues in their neighborhoods. “We are at the forefront of sea level rising here,” said Linda Lancaster, of Plymouth, chair of South Shore and Cape Citizens’ Climate Lobby. “We’re also seeing issues with the ocean, the water quality acidification, the warmer temperatures, the fish are going north.” The climate change bill, first introduced in 2019 after pressure from Massachusetts activists, won legislative approval last summer only to die at the end of the legislative session when Baker vetoed the measure. Lawmakers approved a refiled bill in January and after some debate over amendments Baker signed the measure on March 26.
