Florida lawmakers take their first steps toward redrawing political boundaries in the nations biggest presidential toss-up state.

Months overdue, key U.S. Census numbers were released Thursday that will allow Florida lawmakers to begin the process of redrawing congressional and legislative districts for the state’s 21.5 million residents.

Their wait will be a long one, which will shorten the amount of time they have to campaign. House Redistricting Committee Chairman Tom Leek said it is likely the final redistricting maps wont be completed until the end of next years Legislative Session. The way the process works is a House Redistricting Committee oversees new boundaries for House districts; a Senate Redistricting Committee does the same for its own body.
