Environmental activists in Bengaluru raise concerns over the neglect and waste in city lakes, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic waste management to prevent further deterioration. Moreover, in 2023 alone, 20 episodes of fishkills were observed in 15 water bodies, with multiple incidents reported from Kothanur, Kundalahalli, and Bhattarahalli lakes. Three of the 15 lakes (Kothanur, Bhattarahalli, and Iblur) also had a history of fishkill in 2022. The study also underlined that the number of these incidents is only increasing year after year.
The monthly analysis of over 100 water bodies between January and March 2024 shows that the number of lakes with the worst water quality (Class E) possible, is going up every month.
One case in point is Dorekere Lake. The lakebed is covered with black, dried up slush and silt — the remnants of the untreated sewage that entered the waterbody over years. Experts said this deposition would now allow water to percolate.
