PREVIEW: Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster

Shin Megami Tensei series in the US can be charted back to Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne on the PS2. Originally released in 2004, Sega are now remastering the third numbered SMT game for modern consoles and PCs. We were able to sit down with a preview copy of the Switch version to explore its early areas. Nocturne starts as many of the Persona games do: a number of extremely fashionable Japanese teenagers in contemporary Tokyo gather at the behest of their teacher at a hospital. It s there that a cataclysm called the Conception occurs: the world is destroyed and literally turned inside-out, becoming the Vortex World. Humanity is wiped out, and demons rise up. Your unnamed protagonist just barely survives the devastation, but a mysterious child implants a parasite known as a Magatama into them, turning them into a Demi-fiend. The original PS2 game appeared outside Japan in 2004, three years before Persona 3 really got people talking about Shin Megami Tensei games, and there wasn’t that same appreciation and awareness for the series back then. So now, this remaster is a means of introducing an old installment ahead of SMT V’s debut and further establishing the brand worldwide. Like many SMT games, it begins with the introduction of demons and grand upheaval in a world unaccustomed to things on that scale. The player is an ordinary high school student meeting his teacher with two of his friends. After being unable to reunite at a park due to an event that left people dead, the trio meet up at a nearby deserted hospital. After exploring and searching for your teacher, you learn she’s involved with a world-altering event. You then find yourself surviving the Conception as the Demi-Fiend,

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Hands-on Preview - Hands-on Preview

by Matthew Zawodniak - April 20, 2021, 10:00 am EDT The best way to play a legendary game, but maybe not the best it could have been. I was shocked and excited when an HD remaster of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was announced last summer in a Nintendo Partner Showcase; despite being a fan of SMT and its spin-off subseries,I never had the opportunity to play the original PlayStation 2 game back in the day. Nearly 20 years later Nocturne has finally made its way to Nintendo systems, and Atlus hasn’t sacrificed any of the game’s uniquely bleak themes or incredible difficulty to make it happen although a relaxed “merciful” difficulty has been added for the sake of those who just want to see the story. This classic JRPG has been faithfully ported to Switch with minimal changes, but unfortunately some of the hardware limitations of the PS2 have come along for the ride as well.
