Far From Front Range Light Pollution, Colorado Skies Recognized For Stargazing

The Milky Way over Rocky Mountain National Park. Last week, Gov. Jared Polis announced that June is “Dark Sky Month” in Colorado. The state is already a global leader in preserving dark night skies. This year alone, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, Mesa Verde National Park and four mountain towns were recognized as dark sky places by the International Dark-Sky Association. With this designation, they join Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Great Sand Dunes National Park. While these remote locations are good at preserving their starry views, the cities on the Front Range release a significant amount of light pollution. The excess light negatively impacts nearby Rocky Mountain National Park’s night skies, as well as its wildlife.

There was more May rain in Denver than in Seattle and Portland combined

Denver isn't the first city anyone thinks of when it comes to clouds and rain, but this May has been a break from the ordinary. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Boulder tweeted that Denver has officially gotten 3.65 inches of rainfall this month. That's more than Seattle (with 1.12 inches) and Portland (with 0.58 inches) combined. It might be worth mentioning, though, that while this has been an exceptionally wet spring in Denver, it's been.

Highway To the Sky Set To Reopen

May 27, 2021 Colorado’s “Highway to the Sky” has partially reopened for the 2021 season just in time for Memorial Day weekend.  Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National is currently open to Milner Pass on the west side, about 16 miles from Grand Lake Entrance, and Rainbow Curve on the east side, about 12 miles from the east side entrances. Cyclists and hikers can go as far as Milner Pass west and Rock Cut east, according to officials.  Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the U.S. The 48-mile roadway travels through the high country of Rocky Mountain National Park, reaching a maximum elevation of 12,183 feet.
