India is expected to have its driest August since 1901 due to intensifying El Nino conditions, senior meteorologists have said. The monsoon this year may also be the driest since 2015. With a 32% precipitation deficit in August so far and subdued rainfall predicted for the next three days, India is on track for a record drought.

The rainfall deficit in Karnataka has hit various regions including Bengaluru hard, causing wells to dry up and affecting drinking water availability.

Pune district in India has experienced a 16% rainfall deficit in the monsoon season, with only 602.6mm of rain compared to the normal 713.8mm.

By August 15, the monsoon fell to 5 per cent in the negative, going below the normal range of 4 per cent of LPA, according to latest IMD data.
