The agricultural laws proposed in 2020 by India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government - the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act - have led to a series of events: the resignation of a cabinet minister in September 2020, peasant suicides, and national protests by various farmers’ organizations since November. The largest protest rallies have taken place around Delhi. In the months following the start of their protest, the farmers, mainly from the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana, but also from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, camped around the city, ready to stay there for months until their demands were met.
A Tribute To Dr Tajamul Haque
Though the global fraternity recognised him as an agriculture economist and land policy expert, his empathy with small farmers distinguished him from other domain experts. outlookindia.com 2021-05-04T21:19:13+05:30
It is with profound grief that I bid goodbye to Dr Tajamul Haque who kept alive the “small farmer” in the glittering power corridors of Delhi.
Though the global fraternity recognised him as an agriculture economist and land policy expert, his empathy with small farmers and organic association with the rural population distinguished him from other domain experts.
Tajamul Haque was a distinguished faculty member of CSD in which he had also served as its director.
Last night, the Shiv Sena accused
India Today s Rahul Kanwal of cooking up a lie during his coverage of the assembly election results. Kanwal had said that Sena goons had threatened Serum Institute of India head Adar Poonawalla and demanded vaccines.
Today in the @IndiaToday election coverage, their anchor, @rahulkanwal cooked up a lie to accuse the ShivSena of threatening Adar Poonawalla. This baseless piece of journalism is nothing but an attempt to malign the party. Our letter to India Today Group pic.twitter.com/mlRTqnHAuy Shivsena Communication (@ShivsenaComms) May 2, 2021
Kanwal had confused the Shiv Sena with the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, a political party in Maharashtra headed by Raju Shetti who had reportedly released a video commenting on vaccines. Last month, Shetti had warned the centre to increase vaccine supplies to Maharashtra; if they didn t, he said, his party would stop vehicles transporting vaccines from Pune s Serum Institute to other states.

A senior anchor of an English television news channel apologised to the Shiv Sena on Monday following a protest letter to the channel after he erroneously named the party for threatening Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawala over vaccines.
Senior Sena leader and Maharashtra Industries Minister Subhash Desai wrote to Aroon Purie, head of India Today group, demanding an apology from anchor Rahul Kanwal for an ‘untrue and defamatory’ story.
The letter said, “We do not know the political leanings of the news group as earlier too we have seen another senior Hindi news anchor voice her personal bias against one of our party leaders. However, to attach another party president’s video to the Sena and to deliberately defame us through misinformation speaks volumes of the political bias of the anchor.”
