necessary after bart workers go on strike. good afternoon, i m michelle griego. i m frank mallicoat. we are midway through day one of a bart strike. let s check the roads right now. mobile5 heading across the bay bridge. traffic is backed up on the left side of your screen. as for the rest of bay area, a few slow spots. nothing major to report at this hour and it was a much different scene this morning when thousands of bart riders hit the roads, buses and ferries to get to work. right now kpix 5 s mark kelly is live at the san francisco transbay terminal with more from those worn-out commuters. mark. reporter: well, frank, the many bart riders turned to bus riders today. bart set up 8 east bay locations to bus folks over to san francisco right here to the transbay terminal. so how did day one of this strike go? we asked the riders. trouble for me. this is not good idea. reporter: total frustration for riders snagging a seat on the last bart bus out of walnut creek.
these work rules were dropped on them at the last minute. bart says not true. these rules were in writing as of april 1. this contract negotiation is a package deal. you can t take the money and run. the unions right now want the money. they want the raises. but they want to abond on everything that bart wants they want to abandon that everything that bart wants to provide better customer service. reporter: bart contends the work rules are worth tens of millions to pay for the package saying the company was $9 million over budget in overtime last year. they both said they would go to arbitration but when? how long does the public pay the price? this operator on strike without pay said there s no way managers can operate trains anytime soon safely. there was that talk and it was ridiculous because we re trained for 15 weeks. it s very skilled. reporter: and so bart managers won t be operating the trains. if you see trains on the tracks it s only for maintenance. liz,
