Crestwood and Sunset Hills may be sister cities, but the cities’ aldermen had opposite reactions to a proposal for Sunset Hills to provide 911 dispatching for Crestwood.
The Crestwood Board of Aldermen gave the police dispatching agreement unanimous preliminary approval with no comment in the consent agenda April 27, while the Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen had concerns with the proposal that stopped it on final passage.
Under the plan developed by Crestwood Police Chief Jonathan Williams and Sunset Hills Police Chief Stephen Dodge, the contract between the two neighboring cities would last 3.5 years, with a 3-percent increase each year starting Jan. 1, 2023. Sunset Hills communication officers would provide video monitoring of Crestwood’s Police Department, City Hall and holding cells, as well as non-emergency phone monitoring in non-business hours.
Sunset Hills welcomes three new aldermen to the eight-member board this week following April elections. The incoming aldermen are new to public service, but they are all longtime residents of Sunset Hills.
Christine Lieber of Ward 2, Randy Epperson of Ward 3 and Fred Daues of Ward 4 were sworn in during a virtual Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday, April 27. The trio took over the positions of, respectively, former Aldermen Steve Bersche, Nathan Lipe and Mark Colombo.
Voters had competitive races in all the city’s wards besides Ward 1.
In Ward 2, Lieber defeated Southwest Area Chamber of Commerce board President Marie Davis 58.42 percent to 41.58 percent; in Ward 3, Epperson defeated local business owner Andrew Tolch 56.1 percent to 43.9 percent; while in Ward 4, Daues overcame Bruce Studer 75.14 percent to 24.86 percent.
These are final unofficial election results for South County, with 100 percent of precincts reporting. Look for continuing coverage this week online and in print.
‘The Mehlville School District’s Proposition S bond issue passed with 80 percent of the vote, as did Hancock Place School District’s Proposition R bond issue. For Mehlville, this marked the first time voters passed a bond issue since 1992. The district had been the only one in St. Louis County without a bond issue to fund facilities. The campaign committee supporting the ballot measure, the Mehlville-Oakville United Committee, posted on Facebook, “Prop S is a resounding victory with more than 80% of the vote. Our community came together for our schools and our kids. Voters, THANK YOU!”

There are any number of reasons why two competitors opt out of playing a final match in a pool tournament; it’s late, one of the players has to get to work, another has a long drive, this one just doesn’t want to be bothered, etc., etc., etc. As a rule, we don’t often write about the reasons, because in a lot of cases, we don’t know. The negotiations are initiated by the players themselves and their reasons are often unknown to even the tour director who dispenses the cash in any way the two players dictate. We also don’t generally know exactly how the cash was split, because often, even the tour directors who distribute the cash don’t know. On Super Bowl weekend, however, we were apprised of a ‘top prizes’ split between the last two standing in a $200-added Super 9 Bowl Open, hosted by Beyond Billiards in Davie, FL.
