Editorial: Covid-19 transmission red flags

MMC chairman and Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez says police and military personnel will be deployed all over Metro Manila to ensure strict implementation of the region’s uniform curfew hours.

An independent research group that has been studying the country’s coronavirus situation is recommending stricter mobility restrictions particularly for Metro Manila, saying compliance with minimum public health standards alone is no longer enough at this point due to the dramatic surge in COVID-19 cases.

Molecular biologist and OCTA Research Team fellow Fr. Nicanor Austriaco said the detection of the South Africa variant of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the Philippines is "most concerning" as it could lessen the efficacy and protection of the AstraZeneca vaccine against this particular variant.

OCTA Research fellow Ranjit Rye said some people are no longer adhering to minimum health standards, such as wearing of face shield and observing physical distancing, as prevention of the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

“While most people practice the minimum health standards, they don’t practice it everyday. In fact, [the] majority of people wear face masks [but] the number goes down as we talk about face shields and social distancing,” Octa Research fellow Ranjit Rye said. “These three basic elements of the minimum public health safety standards have to be maintained on an everyday basis until we have vaccinations for everyone in place.”
