Former firearms executive Ryan Busse, a Democrat from Kalispell, officially filed his campaign for governor Tuesday morning – a day after introducing his running mate, attorney Raph Graybill.

The election for governor and his chosen lieutenant is over half a year away, but the race is bringing a newcomer that is literally sweeping across the state.

Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Ryan Busse has tapped a constitutional attorney known for challenging Montana abortion restrictions and other Republican-backed laws to be his running mate against incumbent Republican Greg Gianforte this November.

Graybill, a lawyer, has fought and won against abortion bans in cases playing out across Montana, but he said even though the courts have blocked legislation supported by Republican legislators and signed by Republican Gov. Gianforte, the laws still create fear.

The Montana Attorney General’s Office told the Supreme Court in a filing Monday the court should uphold its legal insufficiency finding for a proposed ballot initiative to further enshrine abortion
