Last March, following its first Big Ten Championship in 30 years, then-No. 2 Northwestern faced off against then-No.7 Michigan in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. The Wildcats fell 67-59, and would continue their struggles against the Wolverines into 2021.
In January, NU lost to Michigan by 21 points in a nationally televised matchup. Then last week, the Wolverines defeated the Cats by five on Senior Day in Ann Arbor.
No. 5 NU had another chance to defeat the No. 4 Wolverines Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis.
And it did. Behind 25 points and 13 rebounds from junior guard Veronica Burton and 18 points from senior guard Lindsey Pulliam, the Cats defeated Michigan 65-49 and will play in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2016 against No. 1 Maryland.

The Colorado Avalanche once again rallied from a two-goal deficit but ended up falling 3-2 to the Arizona Coyotes on Monday night at Ball Arena.It was the third straight contest that Colorado tied the game after trailing by 2-0 at one point, but this time it couldn t come away with any points in the standings. The Avs went 1-1-1 in those outings.Johan Larsson tallied the game-winner for the Coyotes as his shot from the left point appeared to be redirected in front of goalie Philipp Grubauer and hit twine at 4:04 of the third period.
Maryland paid Northwestern a visit Wednesday evening, with the Wildcats in search of back-to-back wins for the first time since December 2020. NU entered the contest in a crowded race for tournament seeding among the Big Ten’s bottom four teams, jockeying for position with Minnesota, Penn State and Nebraska.
The Cats found a way to win, getting a much-needed 60-55 victory over the Terrapins, a second consecutive takedown victory over the Terrapins, a second consecutive takedown of a likely NCAA Tournament team.
The Terrapins announced their arrival with an authoritative 9-0 run to open the ballgame, broken only by junior forward Pete Nance’s layup 4:41 into the first half. Nance’s bucket kicked off an 8-0 rebuttal from NU, as redshirt sophomore guard Chase Audige tallied five early points. The Cats trailed by just a point at the halfway mark of the first half despite junior forward and starter Miller Kopp missing his first five shots from the field.
