A federal judge has told the City Council that it has to redraw the map of the political boundaries of its nine district seats that councillors had approved last fall after sparring over its outlines for months.

The city is working to push back the deadline for council candidates to submit nomination papers, set now for May 23, in light of a federal judge’s decision that barred Boston from using its new redistricting map in the November election.

A federal judge ruled that the City Council likely violated the constitution when factoring race into the establishment of Boston’s new redistricting map, and issued a preliminary injunction to bar the map’s use in the November election.

The Boston City Council must make another attempt at redrawing the political boundaries of its nine district seats, a U.S. federal judge ordered on Monday.

This week, opponents and defenders of a newly drawn district map, which Boston Mayor Michelle Wu signed into law, made their case in federal court. Closing arguments could come on Wednesday.
