Another COVID-19 death reported for Vance County

HENDERSON — Another Vance County resident has died of COVID-19, even as more doses of the two vaccines that could slow the spread of the viral infection trickle into the area. Granville-Vance Public Health officials said the latest victim, a 56-year-old woman, died on Dec. 21 at Duke University Hospital. She was the 67th resident of Vance County to die because of the coronavirus so far in the pandemic. Meanwhile, Maria Parham Health CEO Bert Beard said his hospital received an allotment of the Moderna vaccine — one of two the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved on an emergency basis — on Tuesday.

Feds supply another grant for S-Line planning

HENDERSON — The N.C. Department of Transportation has landed a $900,000 federal grant that will help Henderson and five other cities plan for development around any future train stations along the “S-Line” track that runs from Raleigh to Ridgeway. The award from the Federal Transit Authority, announced Wednesday afternoon, followed a $47.6 million grant from another arm of the U.S. government that will help the state buy the S-Line, which more or less parallels the U.S. 1 and Interstate 85 corridors. The track belongs to CSX and remains active, albeit in limited use. State and federal planners hope it someday can accommodate faster passenger and freight service between Raleigh and the Washington, D.C., area. That’s contingent on authorities also finding a way to put back into service a missing link between Ridgeway and Petersburg, Virginia.
