(AP) A 31-year-old old man has been charged following a hit-and-run crash southwest of Detroit that killed a pregnant woman and her unborn child. Raymond Alkewich of Wyandotte was arraigned Tuesday on a failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing death charge, the Wayne County prosecutor’s office said. Police found the 35-year-old woman Saturday evening along a street in Southgate. She and her unborn child later died, according to the prosecutor’s office. Alkewich was ordered jailed on a $2 million bond. A probable cause conference has been scheduled for March 26.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced the charges Tuesday against Raymond Alkewich, who was arraigned in 28th District Court on a charge of failure to stop at a scene of an accident causing death. It is alleged that on the night of March 13, at approximately 7:45 p.m., Southgate police were called for a hit-and-run accident near Fort Street and Superior. When police and medics arrived they began working on helping the victim, however a short time after getting to the scene police were informed the woman and her baby had died.

He was arraigned Tuesday and was charged with failure to stop at scene of an accident resulting in death. The family of 35-year-old Jessica Strother honored her at an emotional vigil Sunday. Her family knows the arraignment won’t bring her back, but they’re hoping it’s a step in the right direction for the grieving family. “A Detective Stated to the court that Mr. Alkewich did not even have a license on the date of this offense and quite frankly should not have been driving in the first place,” said Judge Elisabeth Mullins in court.
