We made it! After months of wondering whether the 2021 season would even happen, the powers that be figured it out. The student-athletes and coaches stayed as safe and healthy as possible under unprecedented circumstances (can we retire that phrase soon?). And now, we’ve arrived at May Madness.
Choosing the 29-team field involved some unprecedented (sorry) discussions. The Big Ten only played conference opponents. Some teams played 11 or 12 games while others got in 16 or more. And the bracket isn’t without controversy (Duke at No. 7? No Penn State?). But that’s all pundit-speak. Over the next three weekends, teams will settle scores between the lines. Here’s (half of) what to watch for this weekend.

It was a usual day for the Seawolves on Saturday, May 8 as the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team defeated rival Albany Great Danes 16-9 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium for the program’s 54th straight conference win and eighth straight America East championship. Off the solid win, Stony Brook can now turn its focus towards the NCAA Tournament and the ultimate goal of a national championship.
The night prior, Oklahoma softball saw its 65-game conference win streak in the Big 12 snapped by Oklahoma State, giving the Seawolves the longest active in-conference winning streak among all Division I sports.

In a season full of surprises, a pair of favorites punched their tickets to the NCAA Tournament last weekend, with UNC winning the ACC and Northwestern taking the Big Ten crown. Outside of the Power Five, High Point secured its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament automatic qualifier by winning the Big South.
But donât use a pen if youâre trying Bracketology at home. Thereâs still plenty up in the air. St. Joe s shook things up by downing nationally-ranked Richmond in the A-10 semis last weekend, opening the door for UMass to earn its bid to the tournament and leaving the Spiders to sweat it out, hoping for an at-large bid on Sunday.

ALBANY A championship rematch with Stony Brook, in all likelihood, looms.
And, make no doubt about it, that’s the game that will largely determine the way this UAlbany women’s lacrosse season gets remembered.
But the Great Danes cannot play that game, the one their program needs to find a way to win to move forward, until this weekend and they won’t play that game unless they take care of business Thursday against Vermont in the America East Conference semifinals at Stony Brook’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
