Wander Franco is facing a lesser charge after a judge in the Dominican Republic analyzed evidence that alleges the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop had a relationship with a 14-year-old girl and paid her mother thousands of dollars for her consent.

Tampa Bay Rays’ shortstop Wander Franco, who has been in jail in the Dominican Republic since Monday, is due in court in the Dominican Republic Friday morning for a hearing where a judge will determine whether he may be released from jail. 

Dominican prosecutors on Wednesday accused Wander Franco of commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering following allegations that the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop had a relationship with a minor whose mother also faces the same charges.

Prosecutors in The Dominican Republic said Tampa Bay Rays short-stop Wander Franco failed to appear at their office Thursday morning after they issued an official summons requesting to speak with him. This comes after allegations surfaced that he had inappropriate relationships with minors. 

Police in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday raided two homes searching for Rays star Wander Franco but were unable to locate him, according to a new report from local Dominican newspaper Listin Diario.
