EPA gives update on investigation into fires at former chemical plant in Reading

Laurel Street will remain closed between South Seventh and Spring Garden streets in southeast Reading for several more weeks as an EPA team will continue to inspect and assess chemicals left behind by Lincoln Chemical Co. in the basement of the hulking building at Ninth and Laurel streets,

City fire department crews needed the weekend to put out smoldering debris in the vacant chemical plant.

A second alarm was struck for the building at South Ninth and Laurel streets. It most recently housed Lincoln Industrial Chemical Co., but was a brewery for 90 years before Reading Brewing Co., maker of Reading Premium Beer, ceased operations in 1976.
