Over 110,000 people died from drug overdose in the U.S. last year. Close to 90% of opioid-related deaths in California were caused by fentanyl, 37 of which happened in Monterey County.

The latest fentanyl haul is the third drug bust for Monterey police in the past several weeks

On the morning of Aug. 22, Franklin Andrew Glenn, 29, died under a cypress tree in Window on the Bay Park in Monterey, just off the Rec Trail and steps

“This is truly an opportunity to meet people where they are and overcome many of the barriers that people face when they need this life-saving treatment,” explained Dr. Reb Close, a physician in the emergency department at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.  “For years, our  EMS teammates have witnessed the devastation that substance use brings to our community. Now they have the opportunity to actively participate in a long-term solution.” 

The grade schooler was treated at the scene and eventually released to her mother but even that's raising questions

Police say this is the first time they've found rainbow-colored fentanyl, that they say resembles rainbow lucky charms.

It's called Tru Narc, a drug testing device rolled out Friday by Montage Health and the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. The $30,000 device can determine the makeup of counterfeit pills and illegal drugs.
