In patients with cryptogenic stroke and evidence of atrial cardiopathy without atrial fibrillation, apixaban did not reduce recurrent stroke vs aspirin in the ARCADIA trial.

Despite surgical advances, adding extracranial-intracranial bypass to medical therapy does not reduce stroke or death in symptomatic occlusion of the internal carotid or middle cerebral artery.

Clinicians shouldnt expect apixaban to offer benefit over aspirin in patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source simply because they have atrial cardiopathy, ARCADIA investigators conclude.

An unusual cause of ischemic stroke -- the presence of structural bone and cartilage anomalies which cause mechanical stress to arteries supplying the brain -- is highlighted in a new study.

The drug, butylphthalide, was associated with better outcomes after ischemic stroke after thrombolysis or endovascular therapy.

A combination of two drugs showed promising phase 2 results, including a reduction in cognitive impairment in patients with lacunar stroke, and may be a potential new approach to small vessel disease.

These results suggest that continuous monitoring to detect AF should be considered in a larger population of stroke patients rather than just those with cryptogenic stroke, the investigators say.

STROKE-AF’s extended follow-up suggests short-term monitoring isn’t enough, but the significance of any AF found is unknown.
