Apr 4, 2021 To the Editor: I am a registered voter in the Town of Wareham opposed to the rezoning Article 1. I do not believe that any of the criteria under the Governor’s order, nor the guidance issued in February 2021 are met for other than a two-thirds quantum of vote. The section of the new law that focuses on zoning reform appears to be geared toward new housing (not commercial) development. The law focuses on “smart growth” i.e., making sure housing is close to existing tr...

To the Editor: To the people of Wareham,

Meet Kelsey Casey, Plymouths new library director Wicked Local PLYMOUTH – The new director of the Plymouth Public Library blends an old-fashioned love of books and reading with a keen understanding and appreciation of new-fangled services and technology. Kelsey Casey loved reading so much as a child growing up in New Jersey that she worked in her elementary school library during recess. It gave her a head start on picking out the four or five books she often read a night. Years later, as dire...

LETTER: East Wareham zone change is ‘seriously short-sighted’ Wicked Local To the Editor: I urge the citizens of Wareham to reject the proposal to rezone land adjacent to Red Brook to make it available for the construction of hotels, casinos, and other commercial uses. Wareham currently possesses an inalienable birthright in the form of its forests, streams, and marshes, and it ought not to trade that birthright, as the Old Testament puts it, for a bowl of gruel. Though I no longer reside i...

Rather than construct a new $4.4 million Department of Natural Resources building, the Town of Mashpee will seek to purchase two existing commercial bays on Mercantile Way for $850,000 to serve as a home base for the department. In a meeting with the Mashpee Board of Selectmen on Monday, February 1, Town Manager Rodney C. Collins presented the Mercantile Way site as an alternative to an earlier proposal to construct a new facility on Red Brook Road. “Is it as ideal as a $4.4 million facili...

Dec 22, 2020 The Ohio House and Senate passed S.B. 310, the state’s 2021 capital budget late last week, and the bill includes $3.45 million for a number of projects in Ashtabula County. “I am overjoyed with the capital funds that will be allocated for Ashtabula County by the passage of SB 310,” said State Rep. John Patterson (D-Jefferson), in a statement announcing the projects. The single largest amount of money, $850,000, will pay for marina improvements in Conneaut, acco...

Ive been far from boastful of my own outdoor holiday light display. A few strands of lights - big retro bulbs, thank you - strung up in a couple of trees with great effort, whilst haunted by fears of plummeting to earth from the step ladder or jamming a tree branch into my face. So flash. No bling. No blow-up stuff. No blaring holiday tunes. So modest, and yet so deeply satisfying when I gaze from a window into a frigid, drab night brightened by cheery color. Until the gray squirrels descen...
