Big Rapids was one of 10 Redevelopment Ready Communities selected by the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to host fellows for 2021-22. The fellow will take on various projects that aid in community economic development, ultimately helping promote equity and improve quality of life for those who live or work in Big Rapids. Some potential projects include developing an Economic Development Strategy, establishing a Trails Committee, and partnering with city staff on Redevelopment Ready Communities projects.

Midwest Fastener announces large expansion in Portage, Decatur; additional plans for downtown Kalamazoo property By Will Kriss Jun 15, 2021 | 3:49 PM LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced two projects in Southwest Michigan that are expected to create 90 new jobs in Portage and Decatur. “Today’s $10.8 million investment by Midwest Fastener will create jobs and uplift communities in Southwest Michigan,” Governor Whitmer said. “This project will help us continue Michigan’s economic jumpstart with 90 good-paying jobs in Portage and Decatur and additional housing in Kalamazoo. We will stay laser-focused on expanding economic opportunity for Michiganders across the state by creating jobs, supporting small businesses, and adding vibrancy to downtown areas.”

Cadillac Receives State Recognition, Earning Redevelopment Ready Communities Award

9 & 10 News April 21, 2021 The City of Cadillac was awarded the Redevelopment Ready Communities certification on Wednesday by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Cadillac is among more than 50 Michigan communities that have qualified as “thoroughly prepared.” The award recognizes the city’s planning and zoning ordinances to remove barriers and promote opportunities for future investors. The city has been working to qualify for the certificate for the past four years. One the most recent projects include developing the Cadillac Lofts that integrate residential living and business space. Cadillac City Manager Marcus Peccia says, “It really is a great milestone that we’ve reached, the jobs not over, you have to continue working on certain things over time to maintain your certification.”
