and welcome back to our viewers here in the united states and around the world. you re watching cnn newsroom. i m natalie allen. here are our top stories. u.s. president barack obama says he will leave around 9800 american troops in afghanistan until late next year. he says the threat from terror groups like isis and the taliban and appeals from the afghan government contributed to his decision. oscar pistorius will leave prison after serving just one year of a five-year sentence. a parole board is putting south africa s blade runner under house arrest starting next tuesday for the next four years. the former olympian was sentenced last year for the culpable homicide for the murder of his girlfriend model reeva steenkamp in 2014. bulgarian border guards have shot and killed a migrant near the country s board were turkey. reuters cites the bulgarian interior ministry who says the man was traveling with refugees from afghanistan. a spokesman says he was killed
five year-sentence given what happened, that s just not that is not moral, they say. by the way, there s a separate process happening, too, and that s the prosecution looking for the appeal of the earlier court case in which it was concluded that oscar pistorius did not intentionally kill reeva, and they want that overturned and want a fresh trial. when it comes to the hearing on whether he will be released early, is there any testimony before the board as far as his lawyer speaking on his behalf and the prosecutors? it tends to be experts, not any witnesses, if you like, but they will be looking at the evidence, and clearly his behavior will be part of it. the same process that you see gone through over and over again around the world in the u.s., whenever any parole board talks about the release of a prisoner, and here, the difference, of
decedent. it is really troubling. and judge and reeva, we will get you on the other side because of time purposes, but we have so much more on this story of the shooting of a man who appeared to be unarmed. and in the aaron hernandez trial, the jury is back to work but this man they have seen in court day after day and is that the real hernandez, and has the prosecution made the case against him. and listen up rand paul wants you, today, the senator from kentucky as a hopeful for president. does he have a shot with african-americans? we will talk about that coming up.
they re even threatening a ground invasion over the weekend, ordering thousands of palestinians to leave their homes, mostly in areas that are on the border between israel and gaza. as a result of that, the u.n. says 17,000 palestinians have now fled their homes and have taken up refuge at u.n. schools that have been converted into makeshift shelters. the question, though, that remains on everyone s mind is whether or not that ground invasion is going to happen. obviously, the big concern for officials here, both health officials and u.n. officials, is what that ground invasion would mean to a rising civilian casualty death toll that we ve seen unfold over the past several days. back to you guys. nbc s ayman missouohyeldin ia and martin fletcher in tel aviv. let s dig deeper now. reeva, obviously anything that happens in this region has deep historical roots. but this particular go around, this particular part of the conflict was sparked by hamas.
tell us what this is about. it seems awfully curious. i think what is important about this is that it s probably unlikely to make it on to the court record this new footage. that s because as you rightly say, the defense says they are likely to wrap up their case on tuesday. the last defense witness has been excused. also today, there really wasn t any opportunity for the prosecution to try and squeeze this new evidence in by some sort of legal back door. what you are seeing now is going to be just i think for public consumption for the arm-chair opinion makers. it s the first time we are seeing oscar pistorius demonstrate what he says he did that night and how reeva died. just take a listen and look. for the first time, you are listening to oscar miss topisto
