Chances are you know London’s most famous architecturally significant buildings. The Shard, the Gherkin, The Houses of Parliament, the list goes on. But what of the capital’s lesser known structures? They may be hidden in plain sight, with hundreds of us walking past day after day without a second glance, but many are rife with history – and architectural interest.
In 2021, white men are still overrepresented in the Texas Legislature

In a perennial takeaway of The Texas Tribune’s demographic analysis, the Texas Legislature remains mostly white and male.
When the 2021 legislative session begins Tuesday, 3 of every 5 lawmakers in the state House and Senate will be white, although white Texans make up just 41% of the state s population. That’s largely a function of the Republican dominance of the Capitol and the dearth of diversity in the party’s ranks. All but five of the 100 Republicans in the Legislature are non-Hispanic white people.

In a perennial takeaway of The Texas Tribune’s demographic analysis, the Texas Legislature remains mostly white and male.
When the 2021 legislative session begins Tuesday, 61% of lawmakers in the state House and Senate will be white, although white Texans make up just 41% of the state s population. That’s largely a function of the Republican dominance of the Capitol and the dearth of diversity in the party’s ranks. All but five of the 100 Republicans in the Legislature are non-Hispanic white people.
Women have seen gains in the Legislature in recent years, but their underrepresentation is underscored by how marginal those gains have been. Four years ago, women held just 20% of seats; on Tuesday they’ll take roughly 27%. And unlike at the start of the legislative session two years ago, there won’t be more lawmakers named “John” than Republican women in the House.
EVERY map-maker who ever put Christmas Island in its rightful position in the Indian Ocean must have wondered how it got its name. But at least there is an answer. In contrast, Hampshire is full of names that have no obvious meanings and their origins have to be teased out of old documents and other sources. There are no prizes for places such as Portsmouth, Hedge End, Freshwater, Weston, and Easton – and Christmas Island, by the way, got its name in 1643, when a captain of the East India Company spotted it on Christmas Day with his telescope. Also, there may be rational explanations for the several houses named Christmas Cottage in the county – at Odiham, Bishop s Sutton and Freefolk – as well as Christmas Hill in South Wonston.
Gavin Walsh s cancer diagnosis in 2010 at the age of 46 understandably came as a shock. Living in Florida at the time with his wife Ellen, the news that he had prostate cancer hit him like a ton of bricks.
The first step was blood tests. One specific test is a prostate-specific antigen (or more commonly referred to by its acronym, PSA). PSA is a protein produced by both malignant and non-malignant tissue in the prostate gland. However, these tests can yield a false/positive result. That initial first test came back positive. So, the medics re-ran them in the off-chance there was a mistake. They did this as they didn t want to prematurely do an invasive biopsy unless it was completely necessary, Mr. Walsh explained.
