Gov. Greg Abbott assumed the governor’s office in Texas on January 20, 2015 to become the state’s 48th governor. Abbott, a Republican, previously served as the 50th attorney general of Texas from 2002 to 2015. He was the second Republican to serve as attorney general of Texas since Reconstruction. Abbott, who was also a justice in the Texas Supreme Court, is the first governor of any U.S. state to permanently use a wheelchair since former Alabama Gov. George Wallace left office in 1987.
