The Taliban took back power in Afghanistan on 15 August 2021. This crisis compounded the existing crises of drought and Covid-19 in Afghanistan. IDS and its partners provides insights on the impacts of the past 12 months on the people of Afghanistan and what can be done to best support them.

This Working Paper discusses inequalities caused or exacerbated by religious diversity in displacement and how humanitarian action can be aware of and responsive to this. It is based on interviews with Shi’a Hazara refugees from Afghanistan and local, national and international providers of humanitarian support in Pakistan.

On 5 and 6 July the UK Government hosts the International Ministerial Conference on the Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB).  Aiming to “strengthen international efforts to ensure FoRB for all” it’s convening plenary and fringe events with international government ministers, faith leaders and civil society groups, including IDS and partners from the Coalition for Religious Equality and Inclusive Development (CREID).

This book is about the individual and collective struggles of the religiously marginalised to be recognised and their inequalities, religious or otherwise, redressed.

Coptic youth - trained as heritage gatherers by IDS-led CREID programme - welcomed a delegation from the UK Embassy in Egypt, led by HM Ambassador Gareth Bayley, to a reconstituted “heritage village” providing a tangible experience of their intangible heritage e.g. songs, food, handicraft, cultural practices and festival rites.

The devastating Russian war on Ukraine has raised important questions regarding the nature of the relationship between state authority and the Eastern churches in Russia and Ukraine, as well as the role of religious heritage in political culture more broadly.
