Several schools across Hampton Roads are getting security equipment upgrades through the Virginia Department of Education's School Security Equipment grants. These awards can be used for surveillance equipment, mass notification systems, cameras for buses and more.

The Virginia Department of Education is distributing funds especially to schools with frequent problems, to be used for mass notification systems, security card access systems and surveillance for schools and buses.

All schools within five school divisions in the region qualify to provide free meals to all students. Select schools in other divisions qualify.

Speed cameras are now operating in a couple of school zones and are already catching speeding drivers, according to the Chesapeake Police Department.

Chesapeake Police expects the camera’s to be installed and functioning before the end of the 2021-2022 school year.

Six Chesapeake schools that switched to virtual learning are moving back to the classroom next week, while three Suffolk elementary schools switch to virtual.

This means that they show a commitment to providing resources and meeting the needs of military children and their families.
