island, we expect the northwest facing parts of the island chain to really get the brunt of some of the heaviest rain fall. we can experience anywhere between 500 to 700 millimeters of rain fall and the 24-hour period. then it crosses over the island and the return flow brings it back on the southwest facing island part of the island that is the mountainous regions there. and that area could see the possibility of mudslides and landslides. this is the anatomy of a typhoon or hurricane. and the periphery of the eye, you see that warm rising convective air. and that bring the extreme thunderstorms and the intense, intense part of the typhoon and outer rain bans again also encompassing some of the stronger thunderstorm as well. and it is not only the possibility of heavy rain and strong winds, it is rough seas that could easily exceed 30 feet, some of the open ocean swells are enormous at this stage. and that means that the possibility of storm surge going forward for some of the coastal
we are watching this weather system march toward the east over the next several days. here is saturday s severe threat. sunday and monday. this encompasses millions of people across the central u.s. to the eastern sea board. the set up is this, an area of low pressure, a big risk in the atmosphere treks across the rocky mountain region. we have the backside of this with fairly cold air, mountain snowfall. ahead of it, temperatures are going to be mild. we ll pick up the return flow from the gulf of mexico and the risk of severe weather is going to escalate. not just for this afternoon, perhaps more so into sunday afternoon. then, into monday. where you see this red shaded area, that s where there s a moderate risk. the storm system that is could erupt here will be the high winds, large hail and potential for tornadoes. that s all out ahead of this weather system.
we re seeing a couple thunderstorms right now from kansas city extending now into the northern sections of alaska. these aren t severe, but millions of people could be effected today by what could be an eruption of thunderstorms which could spawn tornados. going into sunday and monday, possibly tuesday, we re looking at moderate risk across the country. i ll give you those specific areas in just one minute. here s the setup. area of low pressure moves out of the interior west. it s going to start to move slowly. we get that return flow of moist air coming up from the south. much cooler and drier air on the backside of that. then for sunday, about 5 million people all the way from southern sections of missouri across a good portion of arkansas into northern louisiana, a moderate
headlines. where is the rain? we ve got plenty of it, pamela. thanks for joining us in the studio for today. and victor, good morning to everyone. and yes, plenty of wet weather being found all the way being pumped across florida and into kentucky. i just saw a report coming out of russellville, kentucky. they saw just over five inches of rain, and they were saying they had to do some evacuations there. here is the rain train. that ridge of high pressure just kind of tapping that return flow coming up from the south. and as a result, days and days and days of rainfall across florida, extending on into the tennessee river valley. well, there s going to be a little bit of a shift. we ll start to see that high pressure ridge shift a bit so those temperatures exceptionally hot into the northeast of new england. it s still months across the southwest, but they re starting to see that monsoonal moisture kick in. in the last 72 hours, inlet beach, florida, just under 20 inches of rain. and
sometimes severe. that s what we ve seen over the last couple of hours. as it shifted further east from san antonio. san antonio out of it completely? no, there could be a few leftover showers, could be maybe isolated heavy. but for the most part, we ve watched it shift east so what can we expect as we go towards the evening? well as i mentioned, it looks like the eastern corridor can t rule out the possibility of a thunderstorm here or there. but this is what we have seen over the last couple of hours, some reports of tornadoes that have made their way into victoria county, as well as goliad county, there have been several warnings. there were a few very brief tornadoes that are reportedly that have touched the ground. no reports of any injuries or damage as of yet. but nonetheless, there is that potential. the atmosphere is very saturated. the temperatures have been very warm. we ve got the return flow or the
