If we ever want to send human beings to Mars, we have to be sure we'll get them back. It's time to learn about the Mars Ascent Vehicle or MAV.

The Mars Ascent Vehicle will be transported to Mars on a NASA-led Sample Retrieval Lander, which will also carry an ESA-developed rover.

The Mars Ascent Vehicle needs to be compact while possessing the ability to coordinate with different spacecraft millions of miles away from Earth.

Not all of the players have been chosen for the mission to return samples of Mars back to Earth, but NASA on Monday announced Lockheed Martin will get the chance to become the first rocket to be launched off of another planet.
