Whether the kids in your community are back in the classroom or not, the pandemic has had some serious mental health consequences. There is stress and uncertainty at home, limited contact with friends, and the loss of a school routine. It all takes a toll. That s especially true for the kids who are already in more vulnerable situations.
So what can parents and other adults do to help their children live with the uncertainty of the pandemic?
Erin Hunter is interim director of the University Center for the Child and Family at the University of Michigan. In her practice she has seen increased anxiety and stress across all family members, including kids in all ages. Hunter says children of different ages will express those feelings differently.
When talking about offering in-person learning options, Reynolds said "It was unconscionable that some of our larger school districts weren't doing that. The horror stories, and the horrific stories that I heard from parents and students was unconscionable."
GARY â The Gary Community School Corp. is sticking to its plan to return to in-person instruction this week.Â
In a message Monday, the school district said it plans to have asynchronous virtual learning on Tuesday and Wednesday due to inclement weather.Â
Winter weather, including heavy snow and bitter cold, pushed back the return to in-person learning from Tuesday to Thursday, the school corporation said.Â
The district will return for its first day of in-person learning Thursday, the first time students will go back to buildings since the coronavirus shuttered schools nearly a year ago on March 13.Â
Paige McNulty, manager of Gary schools, said families in the school district chose whether or not to send their children back to in-person learning in a recent Return to Learn survey.
