It’s a busy weekend for Taranaki clubs as league matches continue on Saturday and cup games on Monday. The quarterfinals of the Central Federation Cup take place on Queen’s Birthday Monday, with four of the eight teams being local sides. Peggy Gordon’s New Plymouth Rangers host Hokowhitu at Merrilands Domain. The Palmerston North club sit mid-table in the Horizon Premiership, the equivalent of the Taranaki Premier League. Coach Andy Hamilton’s only doubt to play is Gregor Forrest who continues to be troubled with an ankle injury. Reuben Warburton returns to the squad after a couple of weeks on the sidelines.
Rangers continued to press forward but couldn’t find an equaliser the team deserved. Matters were not helped when Reuben Warburton saw red for his second yellow card with 10 minutes left. Niall and Devan Leggett, Taku Warren and Tre de John were the pick of the Rangers players. A lack of strikers is the main problem and coach Andy Hamilton is looking to bring in a couple from the reserve team. Next weekend sees a return to action in the Federation Cup with a visit to Whanganui City.

Football: Men’s Federation League Central Federation defending champions Peggy Gordon’s New Plymouth Rangers began the 2021 season with a home match against Massey University at Merrilands Domain. The squad has lost 12 players and was unable to bring an import from the UK as in previous years. New coach Matt Hastings and assistants Andy Hamilton and James Malthus have garnered a squad averaging just 20 years of age, with only four regulars from 2020. It was no surprise that Massey, despite having defender Rhys Galyer red-carded after three minutes, quickly took control. From a corner on 12 minutes, Joseph Freeman rose highest to steer a header past 16-year-old goalkeeper Riley Peters to take an early lead.
