In Florida, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, it was estimated that there were 6,000 derelict boats in southwest part of the state. In most cases, boat owners don’t know resources are available to remove them because until recently there weren’t many.
The nonprofit Vessel Disposal & Reuse Foundation (VDRF) is working to remove those boats one by one. So far this year they've removed 16 abandoned and derelict vessels (ADVs).
Back in the sixties, manufacturers started using a new material to make boats. Fiberglass was relatively cheap and durable, but without proper maintenance, it turns out the mix of plastic and glass has a limited lifespan. After 30 years fiberglass may crack and degrade. That’s led some owners across the state to abandon their watercraft in public waters.
