The political collapse of Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has squelched dreams of many –of her region (Busoga), of her people, of the women and opposition supporters gripped for the last 10 years by her outspoken brand of politics.
A parliamentary vote to elect the speaker of the 11th Parliament cast on May 24 felled Kadaga ending her 10-year stewardship of the House and snuffed the fire out of a long-running war with her deputy and eventual victor Jacob Oulanyah. Oulanyah polled 310 votes against Kadaga’s 197 votes.
Among the business to be handled by the members today, is election of Speaker and deputy speaker.
The speakership race has so far attracted Rebecca Kadaga who last evening was dropped by NRM Central Executive Committee but announced she would as independent, her former deputy Jacob Oulanya who is the choice of CEC, FDCs Ibrahim Ssemujju, who was the former Opposition chief whip in the 10th Parliament, DP’s Richard Ssebamala and Rakai Woman MP Juliet Kinyamatama.
Kinyamatama who is an independent NRM leaning MP was however turned away on Thursday because her name was not in the party’s register.

Unyielding supporters of outgoing Speaker Rebecca Kadaga say her name will appear on the ballot tomorrow as the 11th Parliament convenes for the first time since the January 14 elections to vote Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Even though the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting deferred declaring who they preferred last night, the Kadaga camp appeared resolute and had no kind words for those asking her to step down for Mr Jacob Oulanyah, her rival for the post.

The development comes after the NRM top organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC) dropped her in favour of her former deputy Mr Jacob Oulanyah also Omoro County MP, who has been selected as the party flagbearer, ahead of tomorrow’s decisive vote.
