Richmond City Council made a big swing in determining the future of the city, with members unanimously approving a new redevelopment project in the Diamond District during a special meeting last Wednesday afternoon. Outside of Council Chambers, the reaction was more mixed.
Firing the superintendent for failing to deliver would be a perfectly logical reaction to the district’s recent struggles. It would also be an egregious mistake. Creating a leadership vacuum as RPS confronts its most daunting challenges — repairing damage wrought by COVID-19 — will only set Richmond back.
The Richmond Crusade for Voters (RCV), a historically Black political organization, is calling for the immediate removal of RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras. In a statement released Tuesday, the organization said they have “seen enough” to make this determination.
