control poll Just four in ten Irish people understand coercive control despite 30 per cent witnessing it, shocking new study reveals 1 Mar 2021, 0:30 NEW research shows forty per cent of the public don’t understand what coercive control is- despite three in ten people witnessing it.  A study carried out by RED C for Safeguarding Ireland found just 28 per cent understood what it means.  3 3 Patricia Rickard Clarke, Chairperson of Safeguarding Ireland said it doesn t have to be a partner who is abusing the person. Coercive control has been an offence in Ireland since January 2019, becoming only the third country in the world to do so.
