The US Senate has approved the historic nomination of Pakistani-American Zahid Quraishi to the District Court in New Jersey, making him the first Muslim federal judge in the countrys history.

Union County resident Zahid Quraishi won broad bipartisan support with an 81-16 vote in the U.S. Senate.

Quraishi, who is of Pakistani ancestry, is the first Asian-American to serve on the federal bench in New Jersey.

Quraishi was also a military prosecutor and an Army captain in Iraq who tried public corruption cases as a federal prosecutor after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
