WTK Denies Logging In PNG, Astonishes NGOs

""After the signing , they are very very happy and they said OK we are taking you across to Malaysia" - Where? "To KL and then Sibu" - Who did you meet? "The owner of the company Mr Dato Kie Wong Yik" - He was happy? "Very very happy.."

WTK says it has no logging operations in PNG following tax evasion probe allegation

The group said this following a report in the Sarawak Report yesterday that the PNG government plans to audit 20 delinquent logging companies in the country over suspected tax evasion. Nearly all the operations in the country are known to be subsidiaries of some of Sarawak’s biggest hitters Rimbunan Hijau and WTK, the report said. However, in an email to The Edge today, WTK said it has no operations in PNG. Sarawak Report has published a statement by PNG s Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) stating that the logging sector has been one of the delinquent sectors in the country insofar as tax compliance is concerned.

Sarawak Logging Giants To Be Held To Account Not By Malaysia But By PNG!

A stunning announcement yesterday from none other than the government of Papua New Guinea has put a swathe of Sarawak based logging concerns on notice over allegations of criminal tax evasion and illegal plunder of a foreign country. It means that whilst these same companies continue to operate above the law back home, where they effectively control key decision makers behind the GPS state government and are even subsidising a mosquito ‘opposition’ party, they at last face being held to account for their crimes elsewhere. The authorised statement from the PNG’s top prosecutor, Commissioner General Sam Koim, goes directly to the point announcing the plan to audit 20 ‘delinquent’ logging companies in the country over suspected tax evasion – he says he plans to add more companies to the list.

Tributes and warnings on World Press Freedom Day

Tributes and warnings on World Press Freedom Day Tributes and warnings on World Press Freedom Day May 03, 2021 The Pacific Islands News Association has paid tribute to media workers covering the COVID-19 pandemic, recognising their commitment and the “great sacrifice” they have made.            In a statement made to mark 2021 World Press Freedom Day today, PINA notes that while “our health workers have been rightfully recognised as ‘frontliners’ in the fight against COVID19, the critical frontline efforts of our media workers in bringing much-needed information and news to our people has been largely forgotten.”  “Much like our health sector colleagues, our media workers go about their daily work, also at high personal risk and exposure to this virus, but with the unwavering desire to inform and educate our people,” PINA says.
