Image Credit: Submitted/Fintry.ca April 11, 2021 - 6:00 PM The Okanagan’s history is littered with stories of remittance men, who were the younger sons of the British elite who were sent off to the Colonies with stipends to find their way in the new world while first-born sons inherited wealth. One was Coutts Marjoribanks whose sister Lady Aberdeen built Kelowna’s Guisichan House for him in an effort to keep him out of trouble. It didn’t work all the well as the home ...

(ROB MUNRO / iNFOnews.ca) April 09, 2021 - 7:00 AM A year ago B.C. was in a deep lockdown. Most stores and restaurants were closed, leaving highways and shopping malls virtually deserted. On April 7, 2020, iNFOnews.ca sent its reporters out into that empty world to show readers what they were not seeing from the safety of their homes. On that day, B.C. recorded 25 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the provincial total to 1,291. Also on that day, no new cases were recorded in t...

Image Credit: Submitted/Beth Cavers April 08, 2021 - 7:00 AM Cherry blossoms will burst into life over the next couple of weeks and, for the first time, will stretch all the way from Osoyoos almost to Kamloops. But, just when they can be viewed in each region depends totally on the weather. “It’s notoriously hard to predict,” said David Geen, owner of Coral Beach Farms, the biggest cherry grower in Canada. “It’s temperature-dependent. Cases in the Central Okanagan jumped by 73 to 214 from 141 the previous week and only 70 the week before that. The most recent data posted on the B.C. Centre for Disease Control website is ...

April 06, 2021 - 4:30 PM Kelownas mayor has received a COVID-19 vaccination because he volunteers weekly at a coffee shop in Kelowna General Hospital. Mayor Colin Basran volunteers at the Perking Lot Coffee Shop at the hospital on Thursday mornings and that qualified him for an early COVID-19 vaccine because he’s in direct contact with hospital patients. Basran called up the KGH Foundation about a year ago and asked if he could volunteer, foundation CEO Doug Rankmore tol...

Image Credit: FACEBOOK/Frick and Frack Tap House April 05, 2021 - 4:30 PM People really did try over the Easter long weekend to help their local restaurants stay in business given the public health orders putting an end to indoor dining in B.C. Frick and Frack Tap House in Kamloops set up an outdoor canopy so more customers could be safely served outdoors. “People came dressed warmly,” co-owner Adrian Verenca told iNFOnews.ca. “There were others that came and sat down b...

(ROB MUNRO / iNFOnews.ca) April 06, 2021 - 1:00 PM Given the Okanagan’s hot real estate market it’s no surprise that a controversial 5.5-acre motel property overlooking Highway 97 in Lake Country has an offer pending. The boarded up motel owned by Raif Fleihan is called the Airport Inn Lakeside even though it’s not beside a lake and is about 10 kilometres north of Kelowna Airport. Fleihan put the property up for sale in 2019 for $8.1 million even though it was assessed ...

Image Credit: Submitted/Hotelzed.com April 05, 2021 - 1:00 PM Easter weekend turned out to be better than expected for many hotel operators in Kamloops and the Okanagan despite provincial health advice against unnecessary travel. “We’ve been fairly busy all weekend,” Aaron Johnson, front desk clerk for Kelowna’s Hotel Zed, told iNFOnews.ca. “I’m quite surprised.” Most guests were from within the Okanagan, with some Kelowna residents enjoying a “staycation” a...
