Voters of New Bedford’s Ward 3 chose Shawn Oliver and Carmen Amaral as their top two candidates in Tuesday's preliminary election for city councilor.

Shawn Oliver had 193 votes, or 28.26%, compared to Carmen Amarals, 160 votes, or 23.43%.

The Jan. 24 preliminary election for the Ward 3 City Council seat will decide who will face off in the final election on Feb. 28.

Candidates had to file at least 50 signatures with their nomination papers. Once signatures are certified, theyll be preliminary-ballot eligible.
