Director’s contract up for discussion Thursday
WOONSOCKET – In a newly released letter to the Woonsocket Housing Authority, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has determined the agency does not have to repay more than $3.5 million in federal funds that were deemed “ineligible” or “unsupported” during a federal audit two years ago.
Instead, the agency is required to repay $21,425, a small amount compared with the massive potential loss that had city officials raising questions in 2019.
In an April 13 letter, Robert Cwieka, public housing director for HUD’s Boston regional office, complimented the WHA for the “tremendous amount of work put into correcting the deficiencies outlined in the audit report” and detailed the measures taken to address HUD’s concerns. These included staff training, completion of paperwork and ongoing monitoring of the WHA’s grant applications.
