Two emergency medical technicians and a driver who responded to the scene where Memphis police officers beat Tyre Nichols have been fired.

Nichols, 29, was pulled over on Jan. 7 for what police said was reckless driving. After trying to flee on foot, Nichols was severely beaten by police. He died in a hospital days later.

Memphis Fire said Robert Long, JaMichael Sandridge, and Lt. Michelle Whitaker have been terminated for violating “numerous MFD Policies and Protocols."

Two Fire Department emergency medical technicians and a driver were also fired in connection with the case.

The two emergency medical technicians and driver were initially called to provide medical aid for Nichols being pepper sprayed.

(Reuters) - The Memphis Fire Department on Monday said it had fired two emergency medical technicians and an emergency vehicle driver who responded to the brutal police beating of Tyre Nichols, saying an investigation had found they failed to provide adequate medical care.

The killing of Nichols, who was also Black, has led to days of public discussion of how police forces can treat Black citizens with excessive violence, regardless of the race of both the police officers and the people being policed.
