A Beaufort man was arrested Sunday following a cold case.

Western Michigan University students, enrolled in the Cold Case Program, played a role in the solving of a cold case murder of a Three Rivers, Michigan, woman.

The man now accused of murdering 19-year-old Cathy Swartz in 1988 was never on investigators’ radar for decades despite the fact the two knew each other, a source close to the investigation told News 8.

Police say Cathy Sue Swartz was brutally murdered inside her apartment back on Dec. 2, 1988.

An arrest has been made in the 1988 murder of Cathy Swartz in Three Rivers.

Cathy Swartz, 19, was beaten, stabbed and strangled in her apartment; Her 9-month-old daughter was in the next room, police said.

An arrest has been made in a 35-year-old cold case out of Three Rivers. Cathy Swartz was found dead in her apartment back in 1988.

According to the Three Rivers Police Department, Robert Waters was arrested for open murder on Sunday in the death of Cathy Swartz on Dec. 2, 1988.
