Forget now 1.1.1 $700,000 seems a lot considering that the air force already owns the helicopters, so thats just fuel, maintenance, and maybe staffing (but thatd be army pilots and police spotters? So already employed just reassigned). I do know from once living in rural parts near a usually tranquil growing area, those helicopters flying so low are really loud and annoying. Far worse than tourist flights which are at least on the way somewhere rather than circling for day...

This is the latest ride on the merry-go-round of legal shit-fuckery that penalises community groups who dare to face off in opposition to the rape and pillage of the environment. Less than a decade ago, voluntary community organisations were able to apply for Government financed grants, now no longer available, when challenging the likes of Councils, big-moneyed developers, international consortiums and Government agencies in respect of environmental concerns. In almost all but the most frivolo...

Europe still has community transmission and an inadequate covid response. I mean, Im all for lessening flights further due to climate change, also happy for NZ to be forced by covid into a more regenerative way of living, but those are different rationales. Cricklewood 2.2.1 Ive been thinking about international air travel, I like the idea of a progressive taxation system as you dont want to make it impossible for people to visit family etc so for example you get one free...

Nicolas Reid reviews Letters of Denis Glover, an archival collection published by Otago University Press 12 Dec, 2020 05:00 PM 3 minutes to read By: Nicholas Reid Denis Glovers place in New Zealand literature is assured. Along with R.A.K. Mason, A.R.D. Fairburn and Allen Curnow, he was one of those who revitalised New Zealand poetry in the 1930s. The Magpies still takes the prize as New Zealands most-often-reprinted poem. In founding the Caxton Press, Glover turned this countr...

A tunnel is the escape route north, steep hills to the south. Everything feels a long way away. We need a reason to leave town. My father thought anything south of the Bombay Hills was the South Island. His kāinga was Pakiri, north of Auckland, with its loose-metal roads and indolent river, its cowsheds and scorching beach. Now there are better roads but many more cars. I visit the cemetery at our marae just beyond Leigh: this is our ‘meeting-place past the end of the world’ where my fath...
