100 people more than 100 miles away rocking buildings across southern california and toppling items off supermarket shelves. it was felt as far away as los angeles and las vegas and into new mexico. it caused rockslides that caused road closures. and residents are now being urged to remain on high alert as authorities survey the damage. i ve never been through anything like this in my life. so, that s, it s horrifying. this is the biggest one i felt in my life. absolutely. make sure you re stocking up just in case that we have something bigger than we had today and it s, you know, stuff starts crumbling. and these stores can t get back open, we need to make sure and if we can t get to you right away, you have to be able to take care of yourself for a
from the wall that were secured, and computers falling off their desks. we do have some reports of up to 4 inches in the main highways or the road into the area as well as some rock slides and larger boulders that have rolled into the area. we re working with california highway patrol for evaluation of those major thoroughfares and entry into that region. let me ask you about that because i was talking to a woman whose neighbor had driv in and she had recounted huge boulders coming off, you know, the sides of the roads and landing square in the middle of these major roadways and she described herself and her family in trona as being stuck. what is the situation for folks in the area who want to what s the status of the roadways? are they stuck? so at this point the information i ve received is that the major entries and exits out of the region are still intact and are passable. we just ask everyone take that
caution when they are traveling the roadways because the integrity may be compromised as they drive or they have some rock slides in the area. so they ll need to travel slow and only do so when safe approaching certain areas. would you advise people to stay on the roads or stay put? at this point if people are able to do so and their homes are intact we recommend everyone shelter in place and stay within their area. of course as after shocks continue to happen that s a decision everyone ilhave to make on their own comfort level and safety. if there s any immediate hazards we recommend people call 911. it may not be any major structural damage, any power line issues we ll have our firefighters come out and they can evaluate those hazards and get the appropriate resources to mitigate that. last question. how about fires? at this point we don t have any reports of any fires directly related to the incident itself. all the major high-tension leans are intact in the area. we do have
to remind you that if you have been experiencing earthquakes for the last 20 years in southern california, you have been experiencing an extremely quiet time in california history. the last time we had an earthquake in southern california above magnitude 6 was 1999. the previous decade had had about eight magnitude 6s. this has been an extremely quiet abnormal time. this type of earthquake is much more normal. now, we re also hearing from the san bernardino county fire department that they re receiving reports of multiple buildings with minor cracks, broken water mains, power lines down, rock slides, varying degrees of damage. some power outages. cal tech says they did get a 48 second warning here in los angeles.
have been ruptured, which can be extremely dangerous. there can be explosions, we have heard from the fire department they are going on emergency calls for potential injuries as well. it was centered there in ridgecrest northeast of here in los angeles, but certainly felt here as well, and about assen hour ago in san bernardino from where the epicenter was, they re talking about potentially cracks in buildings, some rockslides, and structures that are damaged. this was a very big event that hasn t been seen in southern california in quite some time we are not hearing that this may not have been one particular quake, but two different faults may have ruptured during this 6.4 event there in the ridgecrest area, which would explain some of the damage we re seeing. also seeing big cracks in one of
