The US government believes Chinas Defense Minister Li Shangfu is the subject of an investigation by Beijing and has been relieved of his duties, The Financial Times reported Thursday citing American officials.

Li is the second senior government minister to have a prolonged unexplained absence in recent months.

Li Shangfu has not been seen in public for more than two weeks, fuelling speculation about his position as defence minister.
