SpaceX’s Starship, which is touted to be the world’s most powerful spacecraft—capable of taking astronauts to the Moon, Mars, and beyond—has successfully launched during its second launch attempt but later exploded before making it to orbit.

Elon Musk’s company was aiming to send the nearly 120-metre Starship rocket on a round-the-world trip from the southern tip of Texas, near the Mexican border.

Elon Musk looked on as Starship tumbled back toward Earth, eventually bursting into flame and smoke. Still, SpaceX is declaring it a success.

The FAA reported an anomaly occurred during the ascent and prior to stage separation, resulting in the loss of the spacecraft.

The monster-sized, stainless steel, uncrewed spacecraft cleared the launch tower but failed to separate from its booster, spinning in the air before succumbing to a blast of flames.

Starship made its first attempt at space and burst into a fireball on the way. Elon Musk tweeted shortly after the explosion.
