ROCKFORD Guilford senior Jeremiah Davis led the Vikings (and one J-Hawk) to 55th place in the IHSA state chess championship Friday and Saturday.
Davis, who has been Guilford’s No. 1 player all four years in high school, came in needing four wins to set the area record for wins on the top board of the state chess championship. He opened with three straight wins to tie the record before dropping the next two. He broke the record by winning his final two matches.
Davis finished with a career record of 22-3-3 on Board 1, passing Auburn’s Vincent Do, who went 20-1 in three state appearances.
