ROCKFORD Newcomer Kamrin Muhammad is challenging Rockford School Board President Ken Scrivano for his seat on the board, which he’s held since 2011.
Scrivano is a retired respiratory therapist and hospital administrator. Muhammad is a recreation coordinator at Washington Park Community Center.
Muhammad has a 15-year-old son who attends Auburn High School. Scrivano’s grandchildren attend Rockford Public Schools.
Both candidates are seeking votes in subdistrict C, a geographic area on the city’s northwest side roughly bounded by Auburn Street, the Rock River and Meridian and Latham roads.
Schools within subdistrict C are Conklin, Welsh, West and West View.
Ellis Elementary School is located at 222 S. Central Ave. on the city s west site.
It is one of 21 zone elementary schools in the district, meaning the students that attend the school live in a geographic zone near the school.
Ellis students are 73% black, 8% Hispanic and 11% two or more races, according to the Illinois Report Card.
Of the school s 450 students, 90% are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunches, live in substitute care or are in families that receive public aid.
The clinic is being coordinated in partnership among the Winnebago County Health Department, Rockford Public Schools, Rockford Ministers Fellowship and Walgreens.
